Career / practical steps
Practise explaining how you solve problems
A software interview preparation workbook for structured practice and evidence from your own experience.
STEP 01
Confirm the interview format
Ask the recruiting contact which skills, exercises and environment to expect. Use the role description to prioritise practice. Do not build a preparation plan around a rumoured question list or assume every company uses the same coding and design format.
STEP 02
Practise a complete problem-solving loop
Restate the problem, clarify assumptions, try examples and describe a straightforward approach before improving it. Explain time and space tradeoffs when relevant. Check edge cases and test your result instead of treating the first plausible answer as finished.
STEP 03
Prepare experience with specific evidence
Choose examples that show your own contribution, the constraints, the decision and the outcome. Distinguish your work from the team’s work. Be honest about what was measured and what you would change; invented metrics are harder to defend than a clear account of real learning.
STEP 04
Review the practice, not just the answer
After a mock session, record where understanding, communication or implementation broke down. Rework that skill in a smaller exercise, then repeat the full loop. Keep a short log so preparation time follows observed weaknesses rather than only comfortable topics.
Choose the right next step
- Coding exercise: practise clarification, implementation and tests under the expected conditions.
- System design: make requirements and tradeoffs explicit before drawing components.
- Experience discussion: use specific examples and state your own responsibility clearly.
Worked example
A candidate solves a cache problem but cannot explain when entries become stale. The next practice session focuses on invalidation assumptions and failure cases, not another unrelated algorithm. The goal is to improve the reasoning gap discovered in the mock.
